Prominent Ear

The ear is an organ that has both aesthetic and functional importance, as it greatly influences a person’s appearance. Various shape deformities, including the absence of development, can be seen in the ear. However, the most common deformity is known as “lop ear” or “bat ear,” which occurs when the ears protrude forward from their normal anatomical position. This deformity is not related to the child’s sleeping position or position in the womb, and it does not progress or regress with age. The most significant concern here is the potential impact on the child’s psychological well-being due to the existing deformity.

Surgery for lop ear deformity should ideally be performed during the pre-school period, around the ages of 5-6, for two reasons. Firstly, to prevent negative psychological effects caused by possible teasing or mockery from peers within the school environment. Secondly, because the majority of ear development (80%) is completed before the age of six. However, cases that have not undergone surgery during this period can still undergo the procedure in later years.

These surgeries are performed under general anesthesia for children and local anesthesia for adults, in fully equipped hospital conditions. The surgery typically takes about one hour to complete. The procedure is carried out from the back surface of the ear. The ear cartilage is weakened, and the ear is reshaped according to aesthetic standards by suspending it backward with permanent hidden sutures. The skin on the back surface of the ear is closed with hidden sutures, without any visible stitches on the skin surface, eliminating the need for suture removal. The patient is discharged on the same day. The ear remains bandaged for three days, after which the person can resume bathing. Any bruising, swelling, or edema that occurs during the postoperative period typically resolves within 1-2 weeks.
